Upper Dolpo lies beyond the Dhaulagiri range in the remote rain-shadow region of western Nepal. This isolated area is home to rare wildlife like snow leopards and blue sheep and features villages rarely visited by outsiders, where people follow Buddhist and tantric traditions.
The trek from Jomsom takes you across several 5,000m-high passes, through pristine landscapes dominated by snow-capped mountains, deep valleys, and endless trails. Villages like Sangda and Charkabhot are the only signs of human habitation, offering a glimpse into traditional high-mountain life. Charkabhot, a unique fort-like settlement, reflects the culture of the Bhotia people.
Unlike popular treks, this route is uncharted beyond Sangda-la (5,513m), rarely traveled even by locals. Along the way, you may encounter nomads, yak caravans, and remote alpine landscapes untouched by modern tourism. The journey continues through Do Tarap, Numa La, Bagala, reaching the pristine Phoksindhu Lake, then south to Ringmo, and finally along the main trail to Dunai and Juphal, from where you fly back to Nepalgunj and then Kathmandu.
This trek offers an unprecedented adventure, showcasing the raw beauty of the land, the serenity of high mountains, and the authenticity of remote Himalayan life.
